A reprinting of William Birch’s important color plate book first issued in 1808.  The work included illustrations of 18 country estates, most in the Mid-Atlantic region, on 20 plates.  This volume duplicates in color those plates, as well as Birch’s introduction and comments on the plates.  Also includes a scholarly essary by Emily T. Cooperman that includes a biographical essay on the book and the sites depicted.
